Chapter 9. Working with Video Effects > Working with Advanced Keyframe Interpol...

Working with Advanced Keyframe Interpolation Curves

Your choice of interpolation curve determines how Xpress Pro automatically animates or transitions from keyframe to keyframe, which, in turn, affects the feel of your animation. Xpress Pro gives you the following interpolation options:

  • Shelf: This option holds a keyframe's value until the very last frame before the next keyframe. The result is that there is no smooth transition between keyframes. Instead, one keyframe suddenly jumps to the next keyframe (Figure 9.68).

Figure 9.68. Shelf interpolation is rarely used. It holds your keyframe value constant until the very last frame before the next keyframe, when it suddenly jumps to the next value.

  • Linear: This is Xpress Pro's default interpolation option. The interpolation between keyframes is a straight line. There is no easing in or easing out of keyframes. There is no acceleration or deceleration between keyframes.

  • Spline: With this option, the interpolation between keyframes is a curved line, similar to the effect of the Bézier option (but without the handles). This interpolation provides general easing in and easing out of keyframes (Figure 9.69).

Figure 9.69. Spline interpolation involves curves that ease in and out of keyframes. In this Spline interpolation, the Acceleration slider is pulled all the way to the right in standard keyframing.

  • Bézier: This option adds curved Bézier lines between keyframes (similar to the effect of the Spline option), but with the added bonus of are Bézier handles that allow you to fine-tune the shape of the Bézier curves. (For more information, see “Bézier Handles” later in this chapter.)
