Needle-Drop and Production-Blanket Music Licenses

Needle-Drop and Production-Blanket Music Licenses

High-end production music companies, like FirstCom.com and PremiereTracks.com, generally do not offer buy-out licenses. Instead, you pay for tracks per use (with a needle-drop license), or you pay for unlimited use of tracks over a certain number of productions or a certain period of time (with a production-blanket license).

Each company does business differently, and license costs often depend on your movie's distribution. For example, the Valentino Evergreen Music Collection (tvmusic.com), a collection of vintage orchestral music from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, has different needle-drop fees depending on the length of your project; whether the project is for broadcast; whether the broadcast distribution is local, regional, or national; and so on. Talk to representatives and look over Web sites carefully to nail down exactly what deals a company offers, and don't be afraid to negotiate.
