Idea Generation

Whether you work with print, web, CD-ROM, or DVD, the creative process begins with inspiration. It's not so much the “lightning bolt out-of-the-blue” kind of inspiration where a fabulous idea just pops into your head from nowhere. It's more the type where ideas evolve organically from your own imagination, coupled with a solid understanding of the concept you're trying to get across. The imagination part may be instinctive, but understanding can only be gained through education. In DVD design, this means not only educating yourself about the content of the disc you're designing for, but also about the kinds of things other menu designers have already accomplished.

Educate yourself

If you're new to DVD, or interactive design in general, you'll need to get up to speed on the possibilities before trudging off into the menu design wilderness. Take the time to review a broad cross-section of DVD menu systems to get a feel for what other designers have done with the medium.
