Chapter 12. DVD Showcase: Menu design inspiration

Inspiration fuels the design process. It can originate anywhere: brainstorming sessions, casual conversations with friends, visual observations, random chance—practically any situation that exposes you to new ideas or fresh perspectives. A DVD designer's best intentional source of inspiration comes from observing what other designers have accomplished in their projects. Novice and veteran designers alike benefit from exposure to a wide variety of DVD menu styles. Observation is helpful not only to review visual techniques, but also to understand where your work stands in relation to the standards set by the pros.

This chapter provides a showcase for a broad range of DVD menu styles. All the examples have been designed for commercial purposes, which include movies, concerts, and self promotion. The following pages exhibit menus in a variety of aspect ratios (proportions) due to the fact they were created by designers from many countries. These examples include fullscreen, widescreen, NTSC, and PAL. They'll give you insights not only to creative menu solutions, but also to the high level of sophisticated design awareness around the world.
