Chapter 4. Video & Audio Overview: Essential hardware and software

DVD projects require content, and unless you're working on a big-budget project with an entire team, you are probably the person who will create that content. This chapter tells you what kind of hardware and software you'll need to create audio and video content for your DVD projects.

If you've just recently started your trek into the worlds of audio and video editing, there are two things you should know: First, thanks to the amazing computer hardware, digital camcorders, and software now available, you can create incredible movie projects without being an expert in the fields of audio, video, or editing. Second, you could spend your entire career studying audio, video, or editing. So be patient and learn as you go.

The software solutions presented in this chapter are entry-level and mid-range—popular, mainstream applications that are easy to learn and reasonably affordable. And they all create files suitable for use in a DVD project. The software applications featured here are among the most popular, but they represent only a fraction of the options that are available.

Since most of these products have manuals that are around 500 pages long, we can only try to give you a sense of what the programs do, what they look like, and why you care. We hope to also give you an idea of how user-friendly and technically accessible these applications are, even though they're incredibly powerful, versatile, and provide capabilities previously available only to full-time professionals.
