A Popular Format

DVD has, in a very short time, become the preferred way to distribute film and video to the masses. It's compact, easy to use, and can deliver hours of video content with killer picture quality—no wonder it's had the fastest adoption rate of any consumer format in history. Forget about records, eight-track tapes, cassettes, VHS, or CDs. While each of these earlier formats found favor with the public, none was embraced as quickly as the DVD.

According to IRMA (International Recording Media Association), DVD is in 25 percent of U.S. homes, and it has reached this high level of market penetration within just five years, faster than any other consumer electronics product ever. More than 31 million DVD players have been sold, and consumers can now choose from over 125 DVD player models that are marketed under 50 different brand names.
