The Meaning of DVD

While it may seem obvious to some, we won't take it for granted that everyone on planet Earth knows the meaning of the letters DVD. DVD originally stood for Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc, but these days, no one really cares about that—it's now just plain ol' DVD. Like its technical ancestor, the CD (compact disc), DVD has become an extremely popular consumer video format, rapidly replacing the familiar VHS video tape.

Physically, a DVD disc is the exact same size as a CD, but it contains many times more digital information. A single-sided consumer disc can contain up to 4.37 gigabytes (GB) of digital data. You can certainly use a DVD disc to backup computer files, but it's so much more than a super-sized CD.
