Authoring Software Levels

DVD File Tools

After a DVD project has been assembled and muxed into a collection of VOBs, IFOs, and BUPs, it would seem that it's a done deal and the files are locked and forever uneditable. But despite their “carved in granite” appearance, remember: if VOB files can be muxed, they can also be de-muxed if necessary. The same goes for IFO files—they can be edited if you know how.

Specialized tools allow you to split or append MPEG-2 files, edit the stored values in an IFO file, or even demux a VOB into its elementary video and audio streams.

There are many post-authoring tools available for download as free or shareware utilities. The following site is a good place to start:www.Doom9.org

As you've seen, there's a wide variety of features and options available in DVD authoring. While the options may be plentiful, most authoring software doesn't provide access to every feature contained in the DVD specification. Companies that create DVD software have wisely chosen to provide different feature sets—each appropriate to a specific type of customer.
