Audio Compression

If you plan to export your program to videotape, you probably don’t need to compress the audio. Audio file sizes and data rates, however, often exceed the limitations of other media, such as CD-ROM or Internet delivery.

Audio codecs are designed for the type of audio used in your program or clip, such as voice or music. Some codecs achieve a specific compression ratio, which is part of the codec’s name (MACE 3:1, for example). Choose the codec that is best suited to your purposes (Figure 18.36). A few codecs offer additional options; click the Advanced Settings button in the Audio settings panel to access them. For example, the QDesign 2 music codec contains options that adjust the audio compression (Figure 18.37).
