Chapter 8. Transitions > Using A/B Roll Transitions

Using A/B Roll Transitions

In an A/B-roll editing layout, clips in the A and B tracks overlap, and a transition is positioned between the overlapping areas. When you add a transition, Premiere automatically sizes it to the overlapping area and transitions properly between one clip and the next. If you adjust the duration of the transition, Premiere automatically trims the corresponding clip to compensate for the change and ensure that the transition will work properly.

Even though Premiere usually makes these adjustments automatically, you may have to adjust a transition manually at times. You should understand two basic concepts in the proper arrangement of a typical transition: track direction and clip alignment. As the old saw says, you should understand the rules before you attempt to break them creatively.
