Garbage Mattes

Garbage mattes earned their name because they are generally used to simply “throw out” extraneous areas of the frame. You create a garbage matte by dragging the corner handles of the sample frame to essentially crop the sides of the frame.

You can use a garbage matte in conjunction with other keys to eliminate unnecessary elements. For example, use a garbage matte to crop out the extraneous areas of the frame before you apply a chroma key. This way, you won’t waste time adjusting the key for parts of the image you can exclude right away (Figure 13.63). You can also use a garbage matte to create a simple split-screen effect (Figure 13.64).
