Chapter 7. Refining the Program > Trimming Clips in the Timeline

Trimming Clips in the Timeline

To perform simple trimming in the timeline, you don’t need to select a special tool. The default tool, the selection tool, automatically switches to a trim tool when you position it at a clip edge in the timeline.

To trim a clip in the timeline:

1.
Using the selection tool do either of the following:

  • To trim the in point, position the pointer on the left edge of a clip in the timeline.

The pointer becomes the trim in tool .

  • To trim the out point, position the pointer on the right edge of a clip in the timeline.

The pointer becomes the trim out tool (Figure 7.5).

Figure 7.5. When you position the pointer at the left edge of a clip, the pointer becomes the trim in tool; at the right edge, the pointer becomes the trim out tool.

2.
Drag the trim tool to the left or right to change the clip’s in or out point (Figure 7.6).

Figure 7.6. Drag the trim tool to the left or right to change the clip’s in or out point.

If edge viewing is active, you can view the edge frame in the program view (see “To view edges” earlier in this chapter).

When you release the mouse button, the clip’s in or out point changes (Figure 7.7). When no more source footage remains, you won’t be able to trim the edge out any farther, and the clip’s edge displays a folded corner.

Figure 7.7. When you release the mouse button, the clip’s in or out point changes. When the edge has been trimmed out so that no more source footage remains, the edge of the clip displays a folded corner.
