Previewing by Scrubbing

You can see an effect right away by scrubbing, or dragging in the time ruler. Scrubbing is a term borrowed from tape-based audio and video editing. It refers to slowly rolling the tape over the tape heads. As a previewing method, scrubbing the edit line allows you to watch an effect right away, but without audio and not at full playback speed. It’s a great way to spot-check an effect without pausing to render it.

To preview by scrubbing the time ruler:

  • -drag (Mac) or -drag (Windows) the edit line in the time ruler (Figure 9.8).

Figure 9.8. Option-drag (Mac) or Alt-drag (Windows) the edit line to preview effects as you scrub.

The top of the edit line changes from a triangle to a down arrow. The program, including effects, is visible in the program view. Audio does not play while you scrub.
