Chapter 1. Before You Begin > Optimizing Performance

Optimizing Performance

Here's a rundown of settings and maintenance tips that can help Final Cut Pro perform more efficiently:

Settings

  • Turn off virtual memory on the Memory control panel (this applies to OS 9 only; virtual memory is always on in OS X).

  • Set your disk cache to the default setting (Figure 1.21).

Figure 1.21. On the Memory control panel, use the default disk cache settings and turn off virtual memory.

  • Turn off AppleTalk.

  • Turn off file sharing on the Control Strip.

  • Avoid running other applications and processes, especially networking software and screensavers that run in the background.

  • Do not set Final Cut Pro's memory allocation to an amount higher than the currently available RAM (this applies to OS 9 only).
