Chapter 1. Before You Begin > System Requirements

System Requirements

Final Cut Pro 1.0 was conceived as a DV post-production system that would run on a Macintosh G3 computer. Each new version of Final Cut Pro seems to stiffen the minimum system requirements a bit more, but because fast CPUs and built-in FireWire ports have spread throughout the Macintosh product line, FCP 3 wannabes can keep pace on a top-of-the-line iBook.

With the support of FireWire technology to move the video data at 400 megabits per second, ATI video support, and multiprocessor CPUs, the G4 has reached a performance level capable of handling uncompressed high-definition (HD) video, as well as DV. Final Cut Pro 3 supports a wider variety of video hardware and heftier video formats.
