Exporting an Edit Decision List (EDL)

An Edit Decision List (EDL) is a sequential list of all the edits and all individual clips used in a sequence or project. EDLs are used by video post-production facilities to perform online edits on linear (tape-based) editing systems. If you are editing your program in Final Cut Pro but you are planning to re-create your edits on another editing system, you'll need to produce an EDL.

An EDL is a text file. In a perfect world, you would be able to take that text file to any editing system in the world—linear or nonlinear—and re-create your sequence. In this world, there are many different systems, and each has its own requirements for the formatting of that text file: the way the edit and source media data are arranged.
