Chapter 2. Your Camera > Your Friend, Timecode

Your Friend, Timecode

Timecode is an exceptionally important and useful number. When a tape is recorded, a digital camera assigns a unique number to every frame of the tape and embeds this code number in that frame.

Good timecode makes a “where” on a length of tape. Without a steady code, you would be forced to shuttle around a tape scanning for the scene you're looking for. Timecode also allows computers to understand your tape.
