Videotape

One of the great advantages of smaller camcorders is the tiny size of the cassette tapes they use; six of them, roughly, fit into the same footprint as a single VHS tape. In coming years, standard “linear” videotapes may be replaced by digital video disks, which would allow you to jump to any shot in only an instant. (This would be a great technology, to be sure, but it would have very little effect on your shooting, organizing, or editing.) In the meantime, tape continues to be an extremely economical means of storing digital video, for amateurs as well as professionals.
