Chapter 2. Your Camera

Chapter 2. Your Camera

Ever notice how strangers can walk up to you on a busy street, even in another country, then hand you their camera and ask you to take their picture? It doesn't matter what language they speak, and it doesn't matter what brand or model of camera they have. You'll probably spend about five seconds figuring out how to use it, then you'll point it at them and push the button. Why can you do this? Because if you know the basics, you can take a picture with pretty much any camera. The buttons may be in different locations and you might have to ask a quick question or two; but no matter how fancy or plain it is, a still camera's basic functions are universal.

It's the same with video cameras. If you are familiar with the basics of video and understand how to make your own camcorder work, you can be reasonably comfortable using any other camcorder. This chapter, then, is devoted to getting you familiar with your digital camcorder. Not with all the fancy things it does, but with the absolute basics—what I like to call the “primitives.”
