The First Important Thing About Shooting

Shooting a video is not making a video.

Before the advent of digital video and easy-to-use software packages, editing was way too challenging for most folks. Consequently, the only way to get reasonable home video was to “edit in the camera.” While this is an acceptable compromise in many situations, I think it's nearly impossible to get a satisfying video through in-camera editing: You would need remarkable self-control to shoot events in some sort of final order, and more important, you really don't know what's going to happen out there.
