Editing Terms and Concepts

This chapter is not intended to replace learning how to use your editing application. You'll need to play around with the software a bit and maybe read the manual. But, just as with cameras, most editing packages have some fundamental features in common—whether they're designed for the absolute beginner or the Academy Award–winning professional. Here are a few key software features and editing concepts that should prove useful.

Sync sound

I hope this doesn't come as a shock to anyone, but picture and sound are two completely different forms of media. When you hear sound come out of people's mouths in the movies, what is really happening is this: The pictures were shot with no sound, and the sound was recorded with no picture, and the two have been synchronized and are playing back together. This is called sync sound.
