Chapter 6. Editing > Final Assignment: Small-Moment Video

Final Assignment: Small-Moment Video

Shoot a video of just one event, one episode, no matter how small: walking the dog, doing your morning routine, eating dinner. Nothing that takes planning—just whatever is happening in or around your home at the moment. Try to get good coverage. If some action is happening, remember to get shot/reverse shots as needed, and always do a number of cut-aways. Stay still. Try to frame each shot. Remember all the stuff I've been talking about for the last hundred pages or so.

At some point during the shoot, record for about 1 minute, paying attention to the sound and not the picture. Listen for “ambience” that fits the scene—the sound of your dog's feet on the ground, rustling in bushes, and distant barks; or maybe the sounds of kids talking, plates clanking, and food sizzling on the stove.
