Chapter 6. Editing > Titles and Special Effects

Titles and Special Effects

As I've already warned you, you should not overuse special effects in your editing. They are time consuming to generate on your computer, and making them work well can be difficult. It's an entirely different art form from editing.

To do an effect on a bit of video, your computer must do a lot of mathematical calculations for every pixel in every affected frame. Newer computers with fast CPUs can do this math more quickly than older, slower computers, but for the most part the effects are always done “out of real time,” which means you will have to wait while the computer renders them. If you don't like the effect you see and want to change it, the computer will have to re-render, starting the whole process over again.
