Using Parametric EQ

Parametric Equalization is a common audio sweetening technique that allows you to emphasize some audio frequencies while de-emphasizing others. As on many traditional mixing boards, you can choose as many as three bandwidths to adjust. Ordinarily, the bandwidths correspond to low-, midrange-, and high-frequency bandwidths, though you can set the center frequency and range of each.

To use the Parametric EQ effect:

Select a layer containing audio (Figure 16.34).

Select Effect > Audio > Parametric EQ (Figure 16.35).

The Parametric EQ effect appears selected in the Effect Controls window.

In the Effect Controls window, check as many as three bandwidths (Figure 16.36):

  • Band 1 Enabled

  • Band 2 Enabled

  • Band 3 Enabled

In the Frequency Response graph, Band 1 appears as a red curve, Band 2 as a green curve, and Band 3 as a blue curve.

Define each bandwidth you enabled by specifying the following options:

Frequency sets the frequency (in hertz) that acts as the center or peak of the bandwidth (Figure 16.37).

Bandwidth sets the range of frequencies you want to adjust (Figure 16.38).

Adjust the amplitude of the bandwidth you specified by setting a value for Boost/Cut (Figure 16.39).

Positive values emphasize, or boost, the audio in the bandwidth. Negative values cut, or de-emphasize, the audio in the bandwidth. The corresponding curve in the Frequency Response graph reflects the changes.
