Using Motion Math

The Motion Math keyframe assistant allows you to run and create scripts, automated calculations to generate keyframes. By using Motion Math scripts, you can create complex and naturalistic relationships between layer properties that would otherwise be tedious and difficult to achieve. For example, Motion Math can automatically generate keyframes that simulate a naturalistic bounce; they can also make a layer look like it's connected to another layer by a spring. And even though After Effect's new Expression feature (see Chapter 15) can be used to create complex relationships between properties, it doesn't replace all of Motion Math's capabilities. For example, to synchronize a layer's property values with an audio track, you would probably choose the Motion Math script, Layeraud.mm, instead of using an expression.

As its name implies, Motion Math's scripting language uses mathematical equations to generate keyframes. However, you aren't restricted to motion properties; you can apply Motion Math scripts to any property. Each script is saved as a separate file, which uses the .mm file extension.
