Layer Mode Types

This section describes Layer modes in the order they appear in the Modes pull-down menu, grouping them into loose categor ies. Note that most modes are based on the pixel values of visible channels, not transparency information. The exception to this are modes in the Transparency, Stencil and Silhouette, and Alpha Manipulation categories: These do alter alpha channels.

The effect of any Layer mode will depend on various aspects of the image to which it's applied and that of the underlying image, as well. Certain types of modes are better suited to certain types of images, and vice versa. For comparison sake, each mode in the following examples is applied to the image in Figure 12.15 to blend it with the underlying image in Figure 12.16. Although these black-and-white figures can't represent the way modes will affect the final color, it's more important that you understand what information the mode uses to calculate the final image. You can always see the full-color results for yourself.
