Mask Modes

When you add multiple masks to the same layer, you can determine how the masks interact by selecting a mask mode. Although modes don't create compound paths (as do the Boolean functions in Illustrator), you can use them to achieve similar effects in a composition.

In the following examples, the upper mask is set to the default mode: None. See how changing the mode of the lower mask changes the way it interacts with the one above it? Both masks are set to 75 percent opacity so you can see the difference between the Add, Lighten, and Darken modes.
