Chapter 9. Mask Essentials > Locking and Hiding Masks

Locking and Hiding Masks

Because you can place several masks in the same layer, it can become difficult to isolate the one you want to modify. Fortunately, you can lock masks, both to protect them from unintentional changes and to make it easier to select an unlocked mask. In the Timeline window, a Lock icon appears next to a locked mask. If you're still having a hard time isolating the mask you wish to use, you can hide locked masks. Although hiding locked masks conceals them in the Layer window, they still function normally, and their effects can be seen in the Composition window.

To lock masks:

1.
In the Layer, Comp, or Timeline window, select the mask you want to lock.

2.
Do one of the following:

  • In the Timeline window, click to the left of the selected mask name to make the Lock icon appear (Figure 9.76).

Figure 9.76. Click in the box to the left of the mask's name to toggle the Lock icon on and off.

  • Choose Layer > Mask > Locked.

  • To lock the unselected masks contained in the layer, Choose Layer > Mask > Lock Other Masks (Figure 9.77).

Figure 9.77. Choose Layer > Mask > Lock Other Masks to lock the unselected masks.

Locked masks become deselected and cannot be modified until they are unlocked.
