Chapter 5. Layer Basics > Basic Layer Switches

Basic Layer Switches

By default, the Layer Switches/Transfer Modes panel appears to the right of the Name panel in the Timeline window. Actually, the panel toggles between the Layer Switches panel and the Transfer Modes panel. Whereas previous versions of After Effects only permitted you to toggle between the two panels, After Effects 5 allows you to view the Modes panel alongside the Switches panel.

The Layer Switches panel consists of eight switches that control various features for each layer (Figure 5.30). This section covers the first three layer switches: Shy, Rasterize, and Quality. Other layer switches are covered later in the book. (The Effect and Adjustment Layer switches are covered in Chapter 10; the Frame Blending and Motion Blur switches are covered in Chapter 12; and the 3D switch is covered in Chapter 14.)
