Chapter 5. Layer Basics > Naming Layers

Naming Layers

As explained in Chapter 2, you cannot rename items in the Project window. However, you can change the names of layers in a composition. (Typically, a footage item appears in the Project window just once; however, it may make numerous appearances as layers in compositions.) In the Timeline window, you can choose to view either the changeable layer name or the fixed source name.

To change the name of a layer:

1.
In the Timeline window, click a layer to select it.

2.
Press Return (Mac) or Enter (Windows).

The layer name becomes highlighted (Figure 5.10).

Figure 5.10. To change a layer's name, select a layer and press Return (Mac) or Enter (Windows) to edit the name.

3.
Enter a new name for the layer, and press Return (Mac) or Enter (Windows).

The layer uses the name you specified; the source name cannot be changed (Figure 5.11).
