Chapter 5. Layer Basics > Selecting Layers

Selecting Layers

Naturally, you must select layers before you can adjust them. Starting with After Effects 5, layers selected in the timeline are not only highlighted but also have a textured surface that distinguishes them from other layers.

To select layers in the Composition window:

1.
If you haven't already done so, cue the current frame of the composition so that the layer you want to select is visible in the Composition window.

In the Composition window, click the visible layer to select it (Figure 5.1).

The selected layer's handles and anchor point appear, unless these options have been disabled (see “Viewing Spatial Controls in the Composition Window” in Chapter 7).

To select more than one layer, Shift-click other visible layers in the Composition window (Figure 5.2).
