Pre-composing

As you've no doubt figured out by now, it can take a fair amount of planning to nest compositions and create hierarchies of elements. However, you can't always anticipate the need to nest. Often, you realize that layers should be contained in a nested composition only after they're part of the current composition. Fortunately, you can repackage layers of an existing composition into a nested composition by using a method called pre-composing.

The Pre-compose command places one or more selected layers in a nested composition (or, if you prefer, pre-comp)—thus, accomplishing in a single step what could otherwise be a tedious reorganization process (Figure 15.33 and Figure 15.34).
