Rendering Order

When After Effects renders frames for play back or output, it calculates each attribute in a particular sequence—referred to as the rendering order.

Having interpreted the source footage according to your specifications, After Effects processes each frame layer by layer. Starting with a composition's bottom layer, After Effects renders layer properties in the order they're listed in the layer outline: masks, effects, and transform. Then, the program processes layer modes and track mattes before combining the layer with the underlying layers. Rendering proceeds in this fashion for successively higher layers in the stacking order until the frame is complete (Figure 15.8, Figure 15.9, Figure 15.10, Figure 15.11, and Figure 15.12).
