Writing Expressions

Once you've created a few simple expressions with the Pickwhip, you'll probably want to try writing some of your own—a process that can appear daunting if you don't have experience with JavaScript or scripting in general (especially since After Effects discourages your early attempts with warning dialog boxes about “syntax errors,” “bad arguments,” and the like).

Once you understand a few basic concepts, however, you should feel confident enough to experiment a bit. You also find it easier to decipher Adobe's Expressions guide (or an entire book on the subject of JavaScript), and to analyze other expressions.
