Using Tabbed Windows and Palettes

After Effects 4.0 introduced window groups and tabs. By default, similar windows can be grouped in a single window. When you do this, tabs allow you to select the window you want to use without actually closing the other windows.

By default, Composition windows open in a grouped window; Footage and Layer windows open in a separate group window. However, the Composition, Footage, and Layer windows can be grouped together. An icon on the left side of the tab indicates the type of window in the group of windows (Figure 1.17). The Timeline window can contain Timeline windows for several compositions (Figure 1.18). Similarly, the Effect Controls window can contain Effect Controls windows for several layers in different compositions (Figure 1.19). Because only one Project window can be open at a time, you cannot group the Project window with another window.
