Chapter 14. 3D Layers > Using 3D Material Options

Using 3D Material Options

Three-dimensional layers add a property category called Material Options that defines how 3D layers respond to lights in a comp.

To set a 3D layer's Material Options:

1.
Select a 3D layer.

2.
Expand the layer outline to reveal the Material Options properties, or press AA (Figure 14.27).

Figure 14.27. Expand the layer outline to reveal the Material Options properties, or press AA.

The layer's Material Options properties are revealed in the layer outline.

3.
Set each Material Option property:

Casts Shadows— Turn this option On to enable the layer to cast shadows on other layers within the range of the shadow. This property cannot be keyframed.

Accepts Shadows— Turn this option On to enable shadows cast from other layers to appear on the layer. This property cannot be keyframed.

Accepts Lights— Turn this option On to enable the layer to be illuminated by lights in the composition. This property cannot be keyframed.

Ambient— Adjust this value to set the amount of ambient, or nondirectional, reflectivity of the layer.

Diffuse— Adjust this value to set the amount of diffuse, or omnidirectional, reflectivity of the layer.

Specular— Adjust this value to set the amount of specular, or directional, reflectivity of the layer.

Shininess— Adjust this value to set the size of the layer's specular highlight, or shininess. This property is only available when the Specular property value is greater than 0 percent.

The layer in the Composition window reflects your choices (Figure 14.28 and Figure 14.29).

Figure 14.28. In this example, both 3D layers use the default material options, with Casts Shadows turned on.

Figure 14.29. Here, Casts Shadows and Accepts Shadows settings are off on the left layer, and Diffuse property on the right layer has been increased from 50 percent to 100 percent.
