Understanding 3D Layer Order

As you learned in Chapter 5, layers listed higher in the Timeline window's layer outline appear in front of other layers in the Composition window. After Effects always renders 2D layers in order, from the bottom of the layer stacking order to the top. (See “Rendering Order,” in Chapter 15.)

However, the simple 2D stacking order becomes irrelevant in 3D compositing, where object layering is determined by objects' relative positions in 3D space, according to the current 3D view.
