Before QuickTime 4, QuickTime users interacted with linear QuickTime movies by using a single set of controls called the standard controller. In MoviePlayer (the precursor of QuickTime Player), on Web pages, and in a variety of other applications, this controller was the standard. A single controller was also used for QuickTime VR movies.
As QuickTime evolved, the graphic style of the controllers changed, but the buttons themselves and their functionality remained the same. Figure 1.32 shows the current Mac OS, Windows, and Mac OS X versions of the standard controllers. You’ll see that they vary slightly from platform to platform but have the same set of buttons. (Chapter 5 covers the controls in the standard controllers.)
