Chapter 16. Preparing Movies for Streaming > Creating Fast Start VR Movies

Creating Fast Start VR Movies

Although you generally won’t compress QuickTime VR movies in the same way that you compress linear movies, you can use QuickTime Player to export QuickTime VR movies that viewers can begin to explore before they finish downloading. The term Fast Start refers to these movies, just as it refers to linear movies that can start playing before being downloaded completely.

Fast Start panoramas either have a lowresolution preview that gets replaced by the full-resolution image as it’s downloaded (Figure 16.22) or are structured in such a way that they are downloaded a vertical strip, or tile, at a time (Figure 16.23). In either case, a viewer can start clicking and dragging in the movie before the full VR movie has been downloaded. (Whether you add a preview image or use tiling really boils down to personal preference. A preview’s one functional advantage is that the viewer can click hot spots before the movie is downloaded completely. Without the preview, the hot spots won’t work until the entire movie has been downloaded.)
