About Data Rate and Size

A movie’s data rate is the average amount of data per second it contains. (We mentioned the concept of a video track’s data rate in Chapter 9 and a sound track’s data rate in Chapter 13.) While all tracks have a data rate, data rates for video and audio tracks typically are the largest and, thus, the ones to worry about. A movie’s data rate comprises the sum of the data rates of all its tracks.

The channel through which your movie is delivered has what’s called bandwidth—the amount of data per second that particular hardware and software is capable of delivering.
