Using Alternate Movies

The QuickTime plug-in has a feature that allows smart streaming. The general idea is that although Web viewers see a single movie on your Web page, you can actually have a set of movies on your Web server: Only the movie that’s appropriate for the viewer downloads. (Factors that determine what’s appropriate include the viewer’s connection speed, QuickTime version, preferred language, and CPU speed.)

To set up smart streaming, you first need to generate the movies with the different speci-fications, called alternate movies. Then you use a free, unsupported tool from Apple called MakeRefMovie to create the movie (called a reference movie) that you’ll embed in your Web page. The reference movie contains pointers to the various alternate movies.
