Chapter 18. Advanced Techniques for Web ... > Creating Hyperlinks in a Text Track

Creating Hyperlinks in a Text Track

Just as you can have hyperlinks (clickable text that opens a Web page) in a Web page, you can have hyperlinks in a movie’s text track.

To create a hyperlink in a text track:

1.
Start with a text file that contains all your text track’s text, as well as time stamps and a first line of {QTtext} (Figure 18.15).

Figure 18.15. Start with a text file that contains time stamps.

You can create this file by typing it as described in “Specifying the Duration and Appearance of Individual Frames of Text” in Chapter 10 or by exporting an existing track from a movie as described in “Exporting a Text Track with Text Descriptors and Time Stamps” in Chapter 10.

2.
In the text file, directly before any text you want to be clickable, type {HREF:"http://www. myurl.com"}, replacing http://www.myurl.com with the address of the page you want to open when the text is clicked.

3.
At the point where you want the clickable text to end, type {endHREF} (Figure 18.16).

Figure 18.16. Place an HREF descriptor in front of any text you want to make clickable; then type {endHREF} after the text.

4.
Save this text file and open or import it in QuickTime Player, as described in “Creating a Text Track by Importing a Text File” in Chapter 10.

You now have a text-track movie with a text hyperlink, shown as blue underlined text. (Figure 18.17). You can add the text track to a movie in which you want this clickable text to appear; see “Combining Tracks with the Add and Add Scaled Commands” in Chapter 7.

Figure 18.17. The text you specified with the HREF and endHREF descriptors is highlighted and clickable.

5.
If the movie previously contained a version of the text track without hyperlinks, delete that text track, as described in “Deleting Tracks” in Chapter 7.

6.
Save the movie as a self-contained file.
