Chapter 18. Advanced Techniques for Web ... > Forcing QuickTime to Open Files

Forcing QuickTime to Open Files

The real magic of using the QTSRC attribute (discussed in Chapter 17) in an EMBED tag is that, in essence, it tricks Web browsers. A browser’s job is to look at the extension of the file designated by the SRC attribute and hand it over to the plug-in designated in its MIME-types table. The browser also passes on the attributes listed in the EMBED tag. The plug-in then takes over and does what it’s supposed to do, which in most cases is play or display the SRC file. If the QuickTime plug-in sees that QTSRC is an additional attribute, however, it will ignore the SRC value and handle what’s listed as QTSRC instead.

In Chapter 17, we showed you how this technique can be useful for playing RTSP movies, because a browser doesn’t know how to handle an RTSP file.
