Chapter One. The Editor's Job > Performance: Choosing the Take

Performance: Choosing the Take

The editor is responsible for choosing the performances that best communicate the purpose of the scene—and of the whole piece. Often the director will be involved in these decisions, but if you're lucky, he won't be there all the time.

In most cases someone on set will have kept a camera log. Sometimes the best takes will be circled, or flagged with Good, Better, Best indicators. Having this information is invaluable, especially when the director has already provided her recommendations. But don't rely on the log alone; the editor's eye may discern problems that everyone else has missed.
