Chapter Nine. The Digital Future > Distribute via the Internet (Web Cinema)

Distribute via the Internet (Web Cinema)

All signs point to the inevitability of Web-based video delivery. Of course, it hasn't happened yet, but the only serious question is how long we have to wait.

I don't want to get too starry-eyed about the promise of the Internet, but video delivery over the Web is one of your best avenues for finding enough paying customers to offset your production costs. Let's say only 15,000 of the 6 billion people in the world are interested in ancient Mayan archery; you could conceivably find two-thirds of them on the Internet. If you can also sell them the opportunity to actually view your latest production, Shafts Over Iztacéhuatl, online, the $25,000 you spent on production would turn out to be a good investment. Filmmaking could actually become a sustainable career without your having to produce ads for tennis shoes or makeup.
