I don't know about you, but I'm sick of the choices at the local multiplex. As bigger and bigger companies take over the major film studios, we're seeing a striking conservatism limit the kind of material they're willing to produce and distribute. Increasingly, Hollywood is forcing us to choose between:

  • TV sit-com-quality comedies that rely primarily on sight-gags and fart jokes to make audiences laugh.

  • giddy, shallow romantic comedies that reinforce stereotypical gender roles and focus on the helplessness of being in love.

  • action comedies that depend on ever-more-violent images to whip audiences into a heightened state of blood-lust, the equivalent of a roller coaster with too many loops.
