Chapter Three. Editing Patterns > Editing Experimental Video

Editing Experimental Video

The film medium is capable of communicating in much more subtle and stylized ways than what we see in most Hollywood blockbusters or high school sex-education films. Moreover, every editor loves to experiment with variations on how to cut images together, looking for new ways to convey a mood or feeling through a creative arrangement of image and sound. At one time experimental filmmaking was relegated to an obscure, marginalized area categorized as avant-garde or underground cinema. To extend the language metaphor, you might consider this film genre akin to poetry.

Experimental filmmakers like Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol, Flavio Kampah, and many others have made countless incredible films that ignore traditional editing structures. Sometimes these experiments work brilliantly, communicating unusual feelings, ideas, and themes with terrific power. Other times they are too obscure or random to make much of a mark on their audience.
