Chapter Three. Editing Patterns

Chapter Three. Editing Patterns

Good editors rely on a library of “standard” editing patterns that serve them as guidelines for approaching each particular type of show. After all, no one has time to reinvent the wheel every time she sits down to edit a sequence.

I know you think that you are a unique snowflake, with a personal vision so fresh and insightful that every editing choice you make will be both original and stunningly beautiful. But remember that an average hour of film contains as many as 1,000 edits, and under that kind of pressure even the most resilient snowflake is likely to melt eventually. There is nothing wrong with standing on the slushpile of editors who have come before you and following the tried-and-true editing patterns they have established.
