What Is a Sound Mix?

After the picture is locked, the last stage of editing is the sound mix. Here the three kinds of audio—dialogue, sound effects, and music—must be brought together, combined, and arranged. These can be further divided into many separate elements, each of which will get its own track in the mix. These days a movie mix typically includes at least 24 to 48 tracks; some films use as many as 120! Even the smallest projects gobble up to 8 or 10 audio tracks very quickly.
