Chapter 8. Transitions > Fixing Transitions

Fixing Transitions

Adding a transition to a cut in a single track presumes that there's enough hidden footage to create the transition. If there's not enough footage, Premiere prompts you to change the duration or position of the transition. Premiere can also create extra frames by repeating existing frames, though this option may look strange.

To fix a transition:

Add a transition between clips in a single-track layout.

If the clips do not have enough footage beyond the current edit points for the transition, the Fix Transition dialog box appears. The dialog box displays the number of frames currently available to create the transition (Figures 8.44 and 8.45).

Figure 8.44. Adding a centered-on-cut transition between these clips won't work, because there's not enough hidden footage beyond the cut point. In this case, the folded corner at the edge of the second clip makes it clear that no additional footage is available for a transition.

Figure 8.45. The Fix Transition dialog box appears. In this example, one solution would be to have the transition start at the cut—which would use the hidden footage from clip 1 and not require any hidden footage from clip 2.

In the Options section, select a radio button:

Change Duration To—allows you to shorten the transition's duration.

Repeat Last and First Frames—repeats frames to supply enough additional frames to meet the duration of the transition.

In the Transition Placement section, choose an option:

Center of Cut—uses the same number of hidden frames after the first clip and before the second clip.

Start of Cut—uses the hidden frames after the out point of the first clip.

End of Cut—uses the hidden frames before the in point of the second clip.

Click OK to close the dialog box and apply your changes.

The transition appears in the timeline.
